The ad seems like an artifact from an earlier political era. An online spot from the Colorado Republican Party appeared only hours after Gov. John Hickenlooper last month indefinitely suspended the death sentence of a man who killed four people in 1993 and was scheduled to be executed in August. It is evidence of the slow political re-emergence of crime, what was once a powerful campaign issue that for two decades has been eclipsed by other economic and social issues. Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO) on Thursday slammed former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer for a comment he made about Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).

In an interview with National Journal, Schweitzer criticized Feinstein’s stance on NSA spying practices with an inappropriate metaphor.

“She was the woman who was standing under the streetlight with her dress pulled all the way up over her knees, and now she says, ‘I’m a nun,’ when it comes to this spying!” he said about the senator. “I mean, maybe that’s the wrong metaphor—but she was all in!”

In the same interview, Schweitzer said men from the South like House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) have “effeminate mannerisms.”
