Chris McDaniel addresses his supporters as his son Cambridge, 7, joins him on the stage Tuesday June 3, 2014, at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg, Miss. It could be days or weeks before the results of the Mississippi Republican Senate primary between six-term incumbent Thad Cochran and McDaniel. The race was too close to call on election night Tuesday. With a third candidate on the ballot, neither Cochran nor McDaniel managed to get at least 50 percent plus one vote, the threshold to win outright and avoid a June 24 runoff. Mississippi State Sen. Chris McDaniel (R) issued a short statement on the death of attorney Mark Mayfield, the tea party activist and supporter of McDaniel’s who was charged in connection to the political blogger who photographed Sen. Thad Cochran’s (R-MS) wife for an anti-Cochran video.

McDaniel’s statement on Friday came after news broke that Mayfield had died. Lawyers for Mayfield confirmed earlier reports that Mayfield committed suicide.

Here’s McDaniel’s statement:

Regardless of recent allegations made against his character, Mark Mayfield was a fine Christian man who was always respectful and kind. He was one of the most polite and humble men I’ve ever met in politics. He was a loving husband, father, a pillar of his community, and he will be missed. We are saddened by his loss, and we send our thoughts and prayers to his wife, his family and friends.

  1. He was always respectful, except when he took pictures of a woman suffering from Alzheimer’s, with the intent of smearing a political opponent. Limbauciles sure have strange definitions, like what they think a “Fine Christian” is

  2. Didn’t McDaniel deny knowing him when he was first arrested?

  3. I’m sure knowing he’s the cause of all this makes his wiener feel a little bigger.

  5. A “pillar of the community” doesn’t help break into a nursing home to photograph a woman with dementia for political purposes—or any other purposes.

While I’m sure that Mayfield loved his mother, his behavior was execrable and likely going to result in jail time—something else that a “pillar of the community” would not let himself in for.
