New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) found an escape from the scandals surrounding his administration with a surprise appearance Thursday night at the roast of a former NFL quarterback.

Christie joined a group of NFL luminaries and entertainers at the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan to roast Boomer Esiason, the former Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets quarterback who is now an NFL broadcaster.

The embattled governor took a jab at Esiason’s background.

“I said, ‘Well, fine, he’s a Jersey guy, right?’ I’ll do anything for a fellow Garden Stater,” Christie said. “And then I was told that Boomer is actually not from New Jersey, but he’s from Long Island. Long Island? I mean, that’s like Staten Island without culture.”

He took aim at the other stars on the dais.

“I mean, I’ve seen bigger stars after bumping my head, Boomer, than what you’ve attracted here,” the embattled governor said. “I mean, look at this group. Were Screech and the dog from ‘Frasier’ busy today?”
