The Chinese Consulate in San Francisco said Thursday that it urged U.S. authorities to launch an investigation into an arson attack that damaged its compound, the Associated Press reported.

The consulate said in a notice written in Chinese and posted on its website that a person exited a van parked outside its compound Wednesday night with two buckets of gasoline, then poured the fuel in front of the consulate and lit it on fire, according to the AP.

The notice said San Francisco’s police and fire departments responded to the scene of the fire, which caused “serious damage to the facilities of the consulate and endangered the safety of the consulate officials and the citizens living nearby,” as quoted by the AP. The consulate said an investigation was underway, although it was unclear which authorities were involved.
