Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer declared in a piece published online Thursday that, in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), gay nuptials will inevitably be legal nationwide.

Krauthammer wrote in the Washington Post that in its ruling on the 1996 law that barred federal benefits to same-sex, the Supreme Court was looking ahead to “nationalizing gay marriage.”

“If discriminating (regarding federal benefits) between a gay couple and a straight couple is prohibited in New York where gay marriage is legal, by what logic is discrimination permitted in Texas, where a gay couple is prevented from marrying in the first place?” Krauthammer wrote. “Which is exactly where the majority’s second rationale leads — nationalizing gay marriage, the way Roe nationalized abortion.”
