Republican presidential candidate and former technology executive Carly Fiorina said English is the official language of the United States during an interview with CNN’s “New Day” on Thursday.
In case anyone forgot, there is no federal official language.
The topic of America’s official language resurfaced because former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has been using his fluent Spanish on the campaign trail in order to woo Hispanic voters.
“I admire the fact that Jeb Bush is multilingual. I admire the fact that so many people are multilingual, and I also think English is the official language of the United States,” Fiorina told CNN.
Then she pivoted into talking about how “the border” has been unsecured for 25 years.
Is she saying we tore down the impenetrable wall 25 years ago?
Ms. Fiorina, demonstrating the skills that she used to fly HP and Lucent into the mountain when she ran them.
Q: What do you call someone who only speaks one language?
A: American
He is fluent in all languages, including three that he only speaks!
He can speak Spanish in Russian!
Ms Fiorina, there is no official language in the US despite many attempts to make it so. Though, Franklin apparently wanted it to be German.
Ah, German…
Okay…but I get her point. English is the Lingua Franca of the United States. This is different from a government sponsored “official” language, but it is the language spoken by the majority of the people living in the country. Of course, wording it the way she did just plays into the dog whistle politics.
