The House of Representatives will probe the conduct of the Internal Revenue Agency after it apologized for inappropriately targeting conservative groups for additional reviews from 2010 to 2012, House Minority Leader Eric Cantor said Friday.
“The IRS cannot target or intimidate any individual or organization based on their political beliefs,” Cantor said in a statement. “The House will investigate this matter.”
For its part, the IRS explained that while “mistakes were made” by employees in its Ohio office, the agency’s conduct was not motivated by partisan politics.
White House press secretary Jay Carney called the action “inappropriate” on Friday and that it was already under investigation.
“My understanding is this matter is under investigation,” he told reporters at a press briefing.
