Cardinal Keith O’Brien, the most senior Catholic cleric in Great Britain, resigned Monday as Archbishop of St. Andrew’s and Edinburgh, the BBC reported.
The resignation came on the heels of allegations that surfaced over the weekend that O’Brien committed “inappropriate appropriate” acts with other priests stemming all the way back to the 1980s.
The Vatican accept the resignation Monday, according to the Scottish Catholic Observer, and O’Brien will not participate in the forthcoming papal conclave to pick the successor to Pope Benedict XVI.
