Both of the candidates for the Egyptian presidency have claimed victory, reports Al Jazeera. Voting results, however, are not yet official, and the official results will not be announced until June 21.
The campaign for Ahmed Shafiq said its candidate, the former prime minister under Hosni Mubarak, was leading the race “beyond all doubts,” while the Muslim Brotherhood earlier held a press conference claiming that its candidate, Mohammed Morsi, had won the election. El-Shorouk, an independent Egyptian daily, has tallied 6,820,944 votes for Morsi and 5,490,158 for Shafiq, giving Morsi 55 percent of the vote.
