Liberal comedian Bill Maher crashed into the loaded debate over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict Thursday night with a sexist tweet comparing Hamas to a “crazy woman” that “you have to slap.”

The host of HBO’s “Real Time” tweeted the comparison as Israel was launching a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip following a 10-day campaign of over 2,000 air strikes in an attempt to halt Hamas rocket fire.

Maher’s tweet naturally sparked a swift backlash, both from people who accused him of defending Israel’s actions and from those who thought his tweet endorsed domestic violence.

  1. It’s sickening how little flak this guy takes from the left for his sexism. If we’re going to call out the right for wanting to treat women as second-class citizens - as we should - we should also stand up against the misogynists on our side of the aisle.

  2. Sexist? There’s NOTHING sexy about that comment. We are acting as if there are no women how behave in ways that are downright abusive.

  3. I thought it was funny.
He’s a comedian, not a senate candidate, everything he says or tweets needs to be taken in that context. Same with Stewart, Colbert and even Dennis Miller. … well, maybe not always with Dennis Miller.

  4. Guaranteed shitstorm, but like it matters to him.

  5. how many times to you hear someone say you have to slap men? never. and why do people bring up controlling women so often?

    it is sexist.
