Authorities had no leads after shots were fired Saturday night near Vice President Joe Biden’s Delaware home because surveillance cameras reportedly failed to capture any images of a potential suspect.
The Washington Post reported Tuesday that the lack of cameras aimed at the main road outside the perimeter of Biden’s residence, where multiple shots rang out from a vehicle, was just one of a string of problems with the security system there.
Anonymous officials with knowledge of the home’s security told the Post that the security system at the house was turned off for several months last year because it was so unreliable. The system was repaired in November, the sources said.
A series of security lapses at the White House last year, including a fence-jumper who managed to get deep into the building, prompted the agency’s former director Julia Pierson to resign in November and recently cost four senior officials their jobs.
Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told the Post that on the night shots were fired outside Biden’s home, “the appropriate security measures were in place and fully functioning.”
