It has been one of the chief criticisms against Sen. Bernie Sanders on the campaign trail. How, in an era of gridlock and hyper partisanship, is a Democratic socialist ever going to get anything done on Capitol Hill?
Sanders addressed the question head on Monday night in a Democratic town hall sponsored by CNN.
“I am probably the most progressive member in the United States Senate, but I have–over the years not only in the Senate, but in the House–worked with Republicans when there was common ground,” Sanders said.
“In a number of years, I got more amendments passed in the House, working with Republicans than anyone else,” Sanders said.
Rolling Stone author Matt Taibbi nicknamed Sanders the “amendment King” in a 2005 story on the “horror show that is Congress.”
But as Sanders noted during the CNN event, his biggest lift in Congress came in 2014 amid a Veterans Affairs scandal that exposed that dozens of veterans died awaiting care at a Phoenix VA hospital. Sanders–the chairman of the Senate’s Veterans Affairs Committee at the time– worked closely with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL) to fix the problem. And in a matter of months, there was new legislation that was signed by the president.
Sanders called it “the most comprehensive veteran’s health care legislation in the modern history of the United States of America.”
But Sanders added that his working with Congress would also have to be interspersed with systematic change.
“In my view, you have a Congress today that is much more worried about protecting the interests of the wealthy and the powerful and making sure they get campaign contributions from the wealthy and the powerful.”

Working across the aisle implies that the people on the other side want to work with you, or would even consider working with you. We all know that isn’t the case. If he was elected, the GOP on day one would obstruct everything he does. That’s in their collective DNA. The GOP considers themselves an opposition party, not a governing party, and it shows.
They are going to do this regardless of who wins – Hillary or Bernie. I find this situation very sad – but also very maddening. Republicans today are absolutely not about governing, they are absolutists and obstructionists.
In case you haven’t noticed at least one GOPer has already stated that he will immediately initiate impeachment proceedings against Hillary Clinton for the events in Bengazi if she is elected. There will be non stop investigate Hillary committees, guaranteed. Reality: the GOP will not merely oppose any Democrat, they will make it impossible. You kid yourself badly if you believe Republicans will work with anybody.
Republicans today are no more emotionally mature than most six-year olds. And they wear that badge proudly. I’m not surprised to hear what you said about their plans from Day One. No matter who wins, Bernie or Hillary, they will do whatever in their power to throw tantrum after tantrum.
