Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said in an interview aired Sunday that meeting with Pope Francis was a “very moving experience.”
The Pope met briefly with Sanders on Saturday. Sanders was asked to respond on CNN’s “State of the Union” to Vice President Joe Biden saying that it shouldn’t be suggested that the Pope’s meeting was an endorsement.
Pope Francis himself emphasized that the meeting was not a political endorsement, but “good manners.”
Sanders said that “no one is suggesting that the Pope is embracing my policies.”
“What I will tell you is I was very proud to have been invited by the Vatican to an important conference dealing with morality in economics,” Sanders said. “And the fact that I was invited there was very — for me, a very moving experience.”
I’ve heard it both ways – that the Vatican reached out to Sanders with an invitation, and that Sanders’ people contacted the Vatican and suggested an invitation be extended to Senator Sanders. Which is it?
Well, good for him. It was an honor to speak at the conference.
But I´m going to go out on a limb here and suggest some will seek to diminish significance of the trip.
@beattycat He was invited. > ¨¨We invited the candidate who cites the Pope the most in the campaign, and that is Senator Bernie Sanders,¨ said Bishop Marcelo Sànchez Sorondo, the academy´s chancelor.¨
So, then, the Vatican reached out to Sanders first? Thank you.
As I understand it. Mary Archer apparently suggested that the Sander´s camp reached out for the invitation, but that was denied by her superior, who said that he had invited Sanders.
Here´s a link. Sorry, it´s to a right wing Catho site, but it has the relevant quotes.
@jimtoday since you were expressing some confusion about the issue.
So a person complaining about income inequality flies his entire family on a chartered jet to Rome to give a 10 minute presentation at an academic conference.
Did I get that right?
