Stressing that addressing mental health was the best way to counteract gun violence, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) on Sunday did not entirely rule out reforms to laws governing background checks for gun purchases, though she suggested such reforms are unlikely to prevent mass shootings like the one in Newtown, Conn.
“Should we look at improving our background check system? I’m willing to listen to what proposals come forward on that,” Ayotte said on “Fox News Sunday.” “But, again, I don’t know that that would have stopped what happened in Newtown.”
