Responding to polls showing the President leading Romney overall but trailing on issues about the economy, top Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod said on Meet the Press that Romney had an early edge on economic issues.

“I think that Governor Romney at the early stage gets a bit of an advantage because he has this moniker of businessman and people assume that because of that that somehow he’ll bring some magic elixir to the economy,” Axelrod explained.

But Axelrod doesn’t think Romney’s lead in these areas will last. “But when they get under the hood and see what he’s actually proposing: more massive tax cuts for the wealthy, fewer rules for Wall Street, deep cuts in the things we need to grow — education, research and development, energy — I think people are gonna say, ‘hey we’ve seen this movie before and it didn’t work,'” he said.

Axelrod also pointed out that Romney made the same case in Massachusetts and under his watch Massachusetts became 47th in the country in job creation.
