Two days after the Pakistani Supreme Court convicted Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani of contempt of court, an anti-narcotics judge in northern Pakistan has issued an arrest warrant for his replacement. A judge in Rawalpindi issued the warrant in light of Makhdoom Shahabuddin’s alleged role in importing drugs that can be used to make methamphetamine.
The purported infraction came while Shahabuddin was health minister in 2010, as a pair of Pakistani pharmaceutical companies allegedly used political connections to import huge amounts of ephedrine. The companies are suspected of then diverting the drug to those involved in Pakistan’s drug trade.
