A Tucson, Ariz. man raising money to give away free shotguns in an effort to reduce crime blamed the need for the program on a Democratic city council he said is unwilling to fund police and fire services.

“You know, to the naysayers who say that what I’m doing is lunacy and is crazy, they’re all Democrats, unfortunately,” Shaun McClusky, who is involved in the effort in Tucson, said Thursday in an interview with KFYI’s Mike Broomhead. “The state legislatures, you had several of them come out, and then you had our whole city council, who is a Democratic city council, all seven of them, who refuse to fully fund public safety in Tucson. So this is all on them. This program would not be necessary if they fully funded police and fire here in Tucson.”

The Tucson effort is part of the Armed Citizen Project, a group dedicated to “facilitating the arming of law abiding citizens.” According to a Tucson Weekly report, McClusky said he has raised $12,000 for the program. Recipients “will receive a cleaning kit, they’ll receive the shotgun, they’ll receive slugs, they’ll go through a background check and they’ll also go through the training class,” McClusky said in the report.
