Apple Loses Tablet Market Share To Google Android, IDC Reports

Apple is watching its dominance of the global tablet market erode, with iPad shipments accounting for 50.4 percent of the total third quarter tablet shipments of 2012 (July-September), down from 59.7 percent during the same period in 2011, the market analysis firm International Data Corporation reported Monday.

Meanwhile, a few Android-based tablets made substantial gains over the same period, namely Samsung’s Galaxy Tab and Amazon’s Kindle Fire (18.4 percent and 9 percent, respectively). Here’s a chart from IDC illustrating the tablet market share from Apple and other Android manufacturers from the third quarter of 2011 through the third quarter of 2012:
