Apple on Tuesday announced it was adding a new full-size iPad model to its lineup with the highest memory storage capacity of any model to date: The new 128 GB iPad 10-inch model will go on sale Tuesday, Feb. 5, starting at $799 (WiFi only), $929 for cellular connection support (4G LTE).
The new storage capacity doubles that of the current highest-capacity iPad, the 64 GB model, which starts at $699. Other than that, it has the same technical specifications and size.
“With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs, Apple senior VP of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller said in a press statement Tuesday.
The move is designed to bolster the iPad’s appeal as a tool for enterprise usage (Apple’s announcement noted that many files in the AutoCAD WS App for drafting are often very large) and the new 128 GB iPad’s comes ahead of the launch of Microsoft’s own enterprise-geared tablet, the Surface Windows 8 Pro, which starts at $899 for 64 GB and $999 for 128 GB. As such, it appears Apple is trying to offer an alternative to Microsoft’s Surface Windows 8 Pro for any enterprise users who were holding out for that product, as ReadWrite noted.
