The South Carolina Republican Party announced on Tuesday that it was abandoning its support for a congressional candidate because he described same-sex couples as “Gremlins,” The State newspaper reported.

State GOP Chairman Matt Moore told the paper that, despite candidate Anthony Culler’s June win in a close primary, the party would no longer support his House campaign because his comments did not represent South Carolina.

“Most people learned in kindergarten not to call other people names,” Moore said, according to the paper. “Our party believes in the conservative definition of marriage, but we also believe in loving our neighbors and treating them with respect. Mr. Culler’s desperate attention seeking in no way represents the good, decent South Carolinians across our state.”

Prior to news of Moore’s comments, Culler had posted to Facebook encouraging the chairman to weigh in:

A republican nominee under fire for defending the Republican Party Platform on the sanctity of marriage being between one man and one woman and the leadership within the South Carolina Republican Party is silent?

What say you SCGOP Chairman Matt Moore?

Culler, the challenger to incumbent Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), wrote a Facebook post dated Oct. 14 describing same-sex couples as “Gremlins” who are destroying the Christian way of life.

When his comments received national media attention this week, he doubled down by posting a homemade video to Facebook explaining the “Gremlins comparison.”

“They’re Gremlins,” he said. “They’re these creatures that are so destructive.”
