The “Angry Birds” series of popular mobile and Web games from Finnish startup Rovio has surpassed 263 million active users around the globe, the company tweeted and blogged on Friday. That makes it one of the most popular videogames of all time. Rovio previously noted that Angry Birds is the “number one paid app of all time.”

As Rovio wrote in its blog post:

2012 was a milestone year for us: More than 1 billion downloads (30 million during Christmas week alone), and we had more than a quarter billion monthly active users in December! Many many thanks to all of our fans for making 2012 our best year ever!

Rovio is also working on an “Angry Birds” movie for release in 2016, but promised more surprises ahead for 2013.
