Rep. Todd Akin met with top social conservative donors in Florida Wednesday night as the congressman tries to shore up funding for his campaign since being abandoned by the Republican Party, reports Politico. A staunch social conservative, Akin received support from this community after his “legitimate rape” comments and their support will be crucial to his campaign going forward.

The group Akin met with is “a secretive coalition of powerful conservative and evangelical leaders, activists, and donors” called the Council for National Policy.

A person attending the CNP gathering in Tampa confirmed that Akin was there Wednesday evening, after several sources close to Akin in Missouri said the embattled GOP Senate candidate would be attending. It was unclear if he had been invited prior to his “legtimate rape” remarks Sunday.

The New York Times reported in 2004 that CNP meetings are highly secretive and its membership list is “strictly confidential.”
