Attorneys for Ahmed Mohamed’s family on Monday sent a letter to city and school officials who mistook his clock for a bomb that demanded they pay millions of dollars or else face a civil lawsuit, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Mohamed, 14, was arrested in September at his high school in the Dallas suburb of Irving, Texas when police mistakenly thought his clock, which he brought to school to impress his teacher, was a bomb. The outcry over the incident quickly traveled online and Mohamed got invitations to tour several U.S. and international institutions, including an invitation from President Obama to go to the White House.

The letter from his family’s lawyers alleged that Mohamed had been illegally questioned without his parents present, even though he asked for them, according to the Dallas Morning News. The letter also alleged that the school principal threatened to expel Mohamed if he didn’t admit his clock was a “hoax bomb” and that school and city leaders concocted a plan to “trash Ahmed” to the press following his arrest.

The Mohamed family demanded $10 million from the City of Irving, $5 million from the school district and apologies from Mayor Beth Van Duyne and Police Chief Larry Boyd, according to the report.

Mohamed and his family previously said they planned to move to Qatar, where Ahmed and his siblings would attend school.

  2. Uh, too much. He’ll have to deduct from the damages the value of a White House visit.

  3. While I am less than supportive of this move, I will say that the city of Irving and the school board brought this upon themselves.

Hell will freeze over before the harpy of a Mayor apologizes. She is a right wing extremist and is very anti-Muslim. While I think $15M is high I wish them luck in trying to teach these yahoos some common sense (of course it will come out of the city/school budget, not their own pockets).
