Mitt Romney’s disparaging remarks about the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income taxes, caught on tape at a May fundraiser, knocked the candidate’s “reboot” a bit off course. Nowhere was that more acute than at Romney’s unofficial headquarters, Fox News, Jon Stewart said Wednesday.

“In the 48 hours since the Romney video first gained wide exposure, turd containment crews have been working overtime on Bullshit Mountain,” Stewart said. The network’s pundits first criticized Mother Jones magazine, the publication that posted the video, as a sparsely read leftist rag. Then they called Romney’s remarks inelegant. Finally, they concluded that what Romney said — that Obama supporters are moochers who rely on the government for everything — was basically the truth.

“You’re looking and hearing the cynical, condescending, plutocratic words he was saying,” Stewart said, “not the aspirational, optimistic message he, in retrospect, should have been meaning. It’s like Romney jazz. It’s the words you don’t hear.”
