Our Plan for Denver

As you know, the Democratic National Convention kicks off tomorrow in Denver. And TPM is going to be bringing you wall to wall coverage of the Democrats’ and the Republicans’ convention next week in St.Paul.

So before things get started I wanted to give you a sense of how we’ll be deploying our resources and what we’re going to try to accomplish with our coverage. We’re sending David Kurtz and Ben Craw to be our eyes and ears on the ground in Denver. They’ll be doing video interviews — some live — as well as on-the-scene convention blogging. The rest of our team will be back in New York, taking the view from 30,000 feet, as it were, looking at the big picture, working the phones reporting, watching how the media is covering, interpreting, spinning the events as they unfold, our normal mix of news coverage and analysis.

On a normal day our coverage of the days news winds down at 6 or 7 PM Eastern. But this week and next week we’ll be bringing you live coverage of all the days news right through the final speeches each convention night. Our team will be working late at our New York City headquarters. So we’re setting aside a subsidiary budget for take out Chinese food. If you’d like to make sure the TPM staff has enough quality calories to keep the reporting on its usual razor’s edge, you can contribute a few bucks here.

Our goals for our coverage are basically threefold — 1. We want to keep you posted on all the nitty gritty, the events, details of speeches and scheduling changes — basically a steady diet of nuggets for the political junkies. 2. We want to break news and keep you up to speed on the most important developing stories. And 3. we want to keep an eagle eye, with your help, on the press coverage of the events themselves.

I’m eager to hear from all of you about what you’d like to read and see, what you’re making of what you’re seeing and especially what you can tell us if you’re on the scene in Denver.

Let us know how we’re doing. We’ll make sure you don’t miss a thing.
