In a new ad, the daughter of the slain Sandy Hook Principal Dawn Hochsprung applauds Republican Sen. Pat Toomey’s efforts to pass a background check bill in the U.S. Senate.

The legislation ultimately failed, but in the new ad, which was flagged by Philly Voice, Erica Smegielski says that Toomey reached across the aisle and worked for sensible gun reform legislation in a tough political environment.

“Let me tell you what I know about Sen. Pat Toomey,” Smegielski said in the ad. “When it came time to vote on background checks, Pat Toomey crossed
party lines to do the right thing. That’s who he is and I’m grateful.”

The ad is being run by former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s super PAC Independence USA. The ad looks to be part of a $403,985 ad buy, according to records from the FEC. Bloomberg endorsed Toomey earlier this month. However, both he and Smegielski spoke at the Democratic National Convention in July on behalf of Hillary Clinton.

The ad comes as the Senate Majority PAC spent nearly $1 million in the state on behalf of Toomey’s Democratic challenger Katie McGinty, according to Politico. Those ads painted Toomey as too extreme on guns.
