This photo taken June 23, 2014 shows California Republican congressional candidate Carl DeMaio speaking at the National Republican Club of Capitol Hill in Washington. DeMaio is one of three openly gay Republicans running for Congress this year, but he’s the only one who has managed to make political adversaries of both social conservative and gay rights organizations. He’s too open about his sexual orientation for some social conservatives, but too far to the right and too quiet on social issues to win over the gay rights groups. And that’s just fine for DeMaio, who stresses fiscal conservatism to try to attract voters in California’s 52nd Congressional District. A job offer to serve as a regional political director for Republican congressional candidate Carl DeMaio (CA) was quickly revoked after sexist, racist, and anti-Semitic statements on the would-be DeMaio’s staffer’s twitter account came to light.

On Saturday morning DeMaio’s twitter retweeted a tweet from Blaise Hahs, a second-year student at San Diego State University, which said “beyond stoked that I’ll be a regional political director for Carl DeMaio’s congressional campaign.”

Hahs’s Twitter account included a tweet of a picture of a baby monkey with text that read “Kim and Kanye’s baby.” Another tweet was of a photo of a condom package that said “Israel, it’s still safe to come.” Hahs wrote “Fuckin’ Jews” to accompany that picture. A third tweet showed a sculpture of a man with a pained expression. Hahs tweeted “Bitch, I said NO TEETH” with that photo, according to San Diego City Beat.

A few hours after the DeMaio campaign had retweeted Hahs’ announcement that he would be joining the campaign, the offer was rescinded, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

“After learning of this individual’s clearly offensive and inappropriate tweets, the offer of employment was rescinded,” DeMaio spokesman Dave McCulloch told the San Diego newspaper.

As of Monday morning Hahs’ twitter account was set to private. The Union-Tribune said that the offensive tweets had been deleted.

DeMaio’s campaign also said that Hahs had not begun working yet. Later it said that Hahs would have actually just been working at a low-level post, among more than 300 precinct canvassers who also have the title of “regional political director.”

TPM has reached out to both Hahs and the DeMaio campaign.
