Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has a clear lead over real estate magnate Donald Trump in the Republican primary contest in Wisconsin, according to a Marquette University poll released Wednesday.

The poll showed support for Cruz at 40 percent, followed by Trump at 30 percent and Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) at 21 percent. For Cruz and Trump, this constitutes a total reversal from the previous Marquette poll conducted in late February, which showed Trump beating Cruz by 30 percent to 19 percent.

Kasich has also enjoyed a substantial boost, more than doubling his support by 13 percentage points, up from 8 percent in February. In the period between the two polls, the Republican field shrunk by half. The departures of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) and neurosurgeon Ben Carson evidently have fueled the rise of Trump’s remaining rivals since then.

Trump has been the GOP frontrunner in national polls since last summer and has enjoyed a wide lead in pledged delegates since the primary season began. But the latest Marquette poll comes as his campaign has faced renewed and vociferous Republican opposition. Several other polls have shown Trump trailing Cruz in Wisconsin, albeit by smaller margins.

TPM’s PollTracker Average shows support for Trump at 28, followed by Cruz at 18 and Kasich at 6.

The Marquette University poll was carried out from March 24-28. Pollsters surveyed 471 voters likely to vote in the Republican primary by live telephone interview, with a margin of error of 5.8 percentage points.
