Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax addresses the media about a sexual assualt allegation from 2004 outside of the capital building in dowtown Richmond, February 4, 2019. - Virginia politics went into further turmoil as the lieutenant governor of the eastern US state, where the governor is under intense pressure to resign, was accused of sexual misconduct. Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, who would take over if Governor Ralph Northam steps down, strongly denied the allegation made by a woman about a sexual encounter they had in a hotel room 15 years ago. The woman who accused Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax of sexual assault told Virginia Democratic Rep. Bobby Scott about the alleged incident more than a year ago and The Washington Post even interviewed Scott as a character witness while investigating the accusations, ABC News reported.

Scott and the alleged victim, Vanessa Tyson, have known one another for a decade. According to Scott aides who spoke to ABC, Tyson initially reached out to Scott expressing her disdain for Fairfax in October 2017 and sent him a text message in December of that year, claiming he had a “MeToo allegation” against him. Between late December and early January 2018, Scott reportedly became aware that the allegation against Fairfax involved Tyson.

Scott told ABC News on Wednesday that Tyson “deserves the opportunity to have her story heard.”

“Allegations of sexual assault need to be taken seriously,” he told ABC. “I have known Professor Tyson for approximately a decade and she is a friend. She deserves the opportunity to have her story heard.”

Fairfax has denied the allegations since they were first raised by a pro-Trump website earlier this week. After Tyson released a statement on Wednesday detailing the encounter — which she says began consensually and ended with Fairfax allegedly forcing her to perform a sex act — Fairfax again denied the accusation, but said he takes the situation “seriously.”

  1. I will say as a man I wonder how you can force a woman to give you oral sex if she is fully conscience and he’s not threatening physical violence ? Maybe threatening loss of job or something else like the relationship? I apologize if this should be readily apparent and I’m just too dumb to understand. But I would like to understand and willing to be told how.

  2. Why has this only now come to light?

  3. “Fairfax has denied the allegations since they were first raised by a pro-Trump website earlier this week.”

The GOP has weaponized #metoo against the democratic party.

  4. I believe both of them. I believe she sincerely feels like Fairfax assaulted her, and the he sincerely feels like he did not. Sex is confusing, and our memories shift over time to accommodate our perceptions of events.

The affirmative consent movement has sought to help educate people as to what constitutes consent, but it’s fairly recent and even within its own ranks has major disagreements.

We have to figure out how to handle this as a society so that we don’t lurch from accusation to accusation and let Twitter sort out who’s believable. It does a disservice to both accuser and accused.

  5. I’m going to open a huge can of worms here. Tyson alleges Fairfax forced her to perform oral sex. Was his insistence she perform the act backed up with threats of violence, such as a gun to her head or a knife at her throat? Did he threaten to beat her senseless if she refused?
The bite force of a homo sapien is extremely strong, with some studies placing it very high on the entire scale of living things. A clenched jaw would have to be pried open with some sort of tool to create an opening if a person was determined to keep their mouth closed. What did Faifax do, or threaten to do, that Tyson’s mouth was opened to perform the act? I’ve read her statements and I fail to see any mention she feared for her physical safety or well being if she didn’t do what he demanded. Why didn’t she just say “Fuck you, if you manage to get that thing inside my mouth somehow it’s getting bit off!!”

Maybe a woman in the audience can explain what it’s like to find yourself in these circumstances, and why if you were unwilling to perform oral sex you nevertheless found yourself doing it. I’ve discussed it with Miss Kitty, and she defends Tyson but doesn’t really explain very clearly, other than saying “I’ve been there, you just don’t understand.”

    Some help here?
