The White House is attempting to court some moderate House Democrats who are from red states to break with party leadership and compromise with President Trump on his border wall funding demands, Politico reported.

According to people familiar with the plan who spoke to Politico, the administration hopes their pursuit of a border security deal with more vulnerable Democrats will put pressure on Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who they believe is unlikely to compromise anytime soon.

The White House thinks it might be best to bypass party leadership to try to reach a deal, according to Politico, even though no Democrats have publicly broken with Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) opposition to wall funding.
