President Donald Trump says he’ll be “terminating” the North American Free Trade Agreement as he pursues a deal with Mexico and starts negotiations with Canada.
Trump said Monday during an Oval Office event that he’ll be calling the emerging agreement the “United States-Mexico Trade Agreement.” He says it will mark the end of the NAFTA name.
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto was on speakerphone and says he hopes NAFTA partner Canada will eventually be incorporated into the deal.
Adam Austen, a spokesman for the Canadian Foreign Minister, says Canada had been in regular contact with the NAFTA negotiators.
He says, “We will only sign a new NAFTA that is good for Canada and good for the middle class,” adding that, “Canada’s signature is required.”
What he’s saying he’s doing and what his negotiators are actually doing appear to be two different things: https://twitter.com/ddale8/status/1034102901025792000
And the more formal article using information from that Twitter thread: https://www.thestar.com/news/world/2018/08/10/us-and-mexico-make-nafta-breakthrough-increasing-chances-of-final-deal.html
Why would any country negotiate with the Dotard?
He has shown that he doesn’t honor international agreements (Iran deal, climate change treaty) or any agreements for that matter (see Melania, marriage, and every business deal he has ever made).
He is not even halfway through his term and he is drowning in scandal. He has no authority and may not make it to 2020. Better to sit tight, cut your losses, and wait for the next president.
The difference between Trump.and the other leaders is Trump doesn’t care who he hurts. Yet we haven’t seen a treaty.
Is there some new Presidential power of which I am unaware? The ability to abrogate ratified treaties on a whim? He is so clearly unfit for the office he now holds…er, pollutes. If only there were some Constitutional remedy we could exercise…hey, I can dream, can’t I?
