A Congressional Research Service report about Twitter use by members of Congress finds that the median number of followers for House Republicans is greater than for House Democrats, while the reverse is true for Senate Tweeters.
Clearly not enough people are aware of Sen. Chuck Grassley’s (R-IA) tweets, such as this classic: “Pres Obama while u sightseeing in Paris u said ‘time to delivr on healthcare’ When you are a “hammer” u think evrything is NAIL I’m no NAIL”
The report (pdf) looked at members of Congress with Twitter accounts, and documented the number of followers each had on December 30, 2009.
In total, 2,328,809 Twitter users follow members of Congress. House members have a median of 1,297 followers, while Senate members have a median of 3,536 followers.
The median for Republican members of the House was 1,563, with their Democratic counterparts only having a median of 879.
In the Senate, on the other hand, Democrats slightly outpaced Republicans, with medians of 3,747 and 3,216, respectively.
