Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH) still stands by his vote to impeach former President Bill Clinton in 1998, but he doesn’t think President Donald Trump should be impeached.
Why?
Because Trump never swore on the Bible.
In an interview with the Atlantic published this week, Chabot argued that Clinton “put his hand on the Bible, swore to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth” while testifying on his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
“And then he lied,” the GOP lawmaker said. “He perjured himself.”
But Trump?
“Trump didn’t perjure himself. He was never under oath,” said Chabot.
When asked about the ten instances special counsel Robert Mueller investigated for his obstruction probe into Trump, Chabot waved them off.
“I think when you study almost anybody as closely and with such a fine-tooth comb as the President was studied, you’re always going to find instances where a person’s judgment can be second-guessed,” he said. “But that’s not the standard we use to determine whether we ought to impeach a president or not.”
H/t ThinkProgress.
“Trump didn’t perjure himself. He was never under oath,”
So is he illegitimate?
GOP Rep. Says Trump Shouldn’t Be Impeached Since He Didn’t Swear On Bible
good grief… these assholes just make up the rules as needed. unbelievable.
No - He had his fingers crossed behind his back
Ah yes, the “didn’t swear on the bible” defense, a close cousin of the “fingers crossed” exception.
