A spokesman for the State Department had this take on President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize, reports CNN:
Certainly from our standpoint, this gives us a sense of momentum — when the United States has accolades tossed its way, rather than shoes.
The comment was made by Assistant Secretary PJ Crowley, a spokesman for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“There is an opportunity here,” Crowley said. “The tone has changed — but obviously we recognize that, while the tone in the world has changed, the challenges remain. They are very significant.”
He was referring, of course, to the incident last December when an Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at President George W. Bush, who ducked out of the way. Bush was holding a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
