WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican Governors Association says it raised $50.3 million last year and has roughly that much in the bank heading into this year’s elections.
The RGA on Monday released a summary of its 2013 fundraising. That document shows the RGA with roughly twice as much money in the bank as it had four years ago at this point in an election cycle.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, the current chairman of the RGA, says the money puts the group is in position to defend incumbent Republicans and help other allied candidates.
There are 36 gubernatorial races in 2014. Of those, Republicans control the governor’s office in 22 states.
