Plane Skids Off Runway At LaGuardia, Crashes Through Fence

NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say a Delta plane from Atlanta has skidded off a runway while landing at LaGuardia Airport and has crashed through a fence.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Joe Pentangelo (pehn-TAN’-jeh-loh) says the MD-80 went off the runway at around 11:10 a.m. Thursday. The Fire Department of New York says emergency responders are still assessing people, but any injuries appear to be minor.

Images show the plane resting in the snow with the nose of the jet through a chain-link fence.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines says the 125 passengers and five crew members are deplaning on aircraft slides and have been bused to a terminal. It says authorities are investigating the cause of the incident on Flight 1086.

Pentangelo says the plane is apparently leaking fuel.

  1. I hope all are safe and unharmed.

  2. There has actually been talk of letting even bigger planes land at LAG. Might be time for some runway expansion. This is weather related, yes, but since planes do land in this type of weather, we need to give them more room to do it.

  4. Delta is still flying MD-80s? Wow! Unrelated to this incident, this plane must be really old. This is probably its last landing, since repair parts would almost impossible to locate…short of cannibalizing another wreck.
