Michael Byrd, the until-recently unidentified Capitol Police officer who fatally shot Capitol insurrectionist Ashli Babbitt, says he’s received threats as ex-President Donald Trump and his allies have sought to paint Babbitt as a martyr.

“They talked about killing me, cutting off my head,” Byrd told NBC News in one of the pre-taped interview clips that aired on Thursday and Friday. “You know, very vicious and cruel things.”

Byrd, who is Black, also acknowledged that he was targeted for his race.

“There were some racist attacks as well,” he said.

The officer pushed back against Trump’s “disheartening” attacks, in which the former president cast him as a murderer and a Democratic operative.

“If he was in the room or anywhere and I’m responsible for him, I [would be] prepared to do the same thing for him and his family,” Byrd told NBC News.

Additionally, “I do my job for Republican, for Democrat, for white, for Black, red, blue, green,” the officer said.

Byrd explained that he had decided to come forward and identify himself despite all the threats because he wanted to show “courage.”

“I believe I showed the utmost courage on January 6th,” he said. “And it’s time for me to do that now.”

Earlier this week, the U.S. Capitol Police Department announced that its investigation into Babbitt’s death found that the Byrd, who was still unidentified at the time, had acted “lawfully,” and noted that he and his family had been hit with threats.

“This officer and the officer’s family have been the subject of numerous credible and specific threats for actions that were taken as part of the job of all our officers: defending the Congress, Members, staff and the democratic process,” the department said in a statement.

Though Byrd’s identity had been hidden up until Wednesday, Trump and his foot soldiers had already peppered their attacks on the officer with dog whistles that invoked the racist trope of a Black man being violent toward an innocent white woman.

  1. Now that all the details have come out, and this officer has been able to tell his side of the story I am sure that Republicans everywhere will “Back the Blue.”

  2. Of course the man who single-handedly* ended the insurrection by justifiably killing one of its terrorists is receiving death threats. They think overthrowing the government is a good thing! Even though they all pussied out on actually carrying through with it as soon as word got out that they could actually get shot and killed for that shit.

*Technically, it was a two-handed shooting stance that brought an end to the insurrection, but you know what I mean.

ETA: Had dumb terrorist Ashli Babbitt survived getting justifiably shot while attempting to climb through a barricaded window leading into the hallway immediately outside the House chamber where dozens of members were still holed up waiting to be evacuated, she would be facing at a minimum felony charges for obstructing an official proceeding. And her pre-J6 statements and conduct are vile enough that it’s entirely plausible she would be on the hook for conspiracy charges that would make her liable for the conduct of her fellow conspirators, which includes multiple assaults on cops. Honestly, I wish she had survived solely so she could have spent a decade or more in maximum security federal prison.

I wonder if he’s one of the 7 Cap Cops suing TFG and his minions? I hope so. Even if not, he’s got a good defamation case against El Gordo Naranjo.

  5. That’s “El Gordo NaranjO.” (Spanish adjectives will change depending on the gender of the word being modified.) Works for me, either way.
