The legalization of gay marriage could soon be a reality in New York state, as historic and beleaguered legislation moves to the state Senate floor today. The New York Times reports that, after passing easily in the State Assembly, the bill to extend marriage rights to all couples has moved to the senior legislative body.

Democrats in the state Senate have a slight, albeit uneasy, majority. However, at least one Democratic Senator, Ruben Diaz Sr. from the Bronx, has repeatedly vowed to block the amendment.

The bill’s Democratic sponsors will be working hastily today to get some Republican support. Just before noon, the bill passed the Rules Committee to move to the floor. But it will certainly see some heated debate on both sides of the aisle.

Late Update: We are streaming the historic debate live. You can watch it here.
