The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association put out a statement Wednesday denying the embarrassing Politico report detailing President Donald Trump’s ignorance during a tour of Mt. Vernon with French President Emmanuel Macron.
“Mount Vernon has a firm, long-standing policy of not commenting on the details of high-profile visits to the home of George Washington,” they wrote in a statement. “However, we believe in the importance of ensuring that reports about events that take place at Mount Vernon are accurate.”
“During the tour, all parties were interested and engaged in the story of George Washington and his beloved home,” the statement continued. “Conversations touched on topics like business dealings, real estate, and related matters that were of relevance and interest to the touring parties, and questions were asked by both leaders with curiosity and respect. Comments pulled from sources who were not present for the tour do not properly convey the tone and context in which they were delivered.”
Politico reported that during the tour last April, the guide struggled to keep Trump’s attention, and only piqued his interest when talking about Washington’s real estate dealings. Trump reportedly critiqued that narrow hallways and small rooms, concluding that he could have built it for cheaper.
“If he was smart, he would’ve put his name on it,” Trump noted about the mansion. “You’ve got to put your name on stuff or no one remembers you.”
Hah.(Allegedly) inaccurate report of the “tone and context.” Not of the substance.
They could say a Sasquatch was along for the visit and I’d be likelier to believe it than reports of a Donald-Trump-like creature that managed to behave appropriately and didn’t make an ass of itself for once in its life.
“Conversations touched on topics like business dealings, real estate, and related matters that were of relevance and interest to the touring parties, and questions were asked by both leaders with curiosity and respect."
So, Trump absolutely said Washington should have named Mt. Vernon after himself. Because that’s the main kind of business dealing and real estate conversations he’s had in the past 10 years, and his own branding is what really interests him.
And this from the full statement:
“Mount Vernon has welcomed heads of state and world leaders, offering them a place to find inspiration in Washington’s example of servant leadership.”
I’d say that bit of “inspiration” fell on disinterested ears.
Yep, basically they’re confirming the report.
I know, who is interested in “business dealings, real estate, and related matters”, and only that. You are not fooling anyone.
