White House senior adviser Jared Kushner presented Republican senators with an immigration plan that would increase border security while also maintaining the current level of legal immigrants in the country, Politico reported.
Kushner has been quietly working on the plan for months and told lawmakers Tuesday that he believes he has the support of President Trump and some of the more conservative members of the administration, despite the president’s past calls to significantly cut legal immigration. Kushner reportedly crafted the plan in hopes of giving Trump solid immigration policy to stand on as he heads into 2020.
The plan will focus on expanding merit-based immigration policy, giving priority to high-skilled workers who want to come to the U.S.
“The number one goal in that is to make sure that we’re not bring in low-skilled labor,” a White House official told Politico.
