Former President Jimmy Carter, who once brokered a deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s grandfather, is offering his services to the Trump administration to help push negotiations forward.

According to a Thursday Politico report, Carter (age 94) no longer travels, but told Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) that he would make the trek if President Donald Trump asked him.

In 1994, Carter met with Kim Il Sung and the two leaders hammered out a detailed plan to work towards peace and denuclearization. He is the only American President to have such success with North Korean leadership.

Per Politico, Robert Malley, a conflict specialist who worked under President Barack Obama, also has offered his services.

Trump seems unlikely to take either men up on their offers. In recent days, Trump’s attempt to negotiate with Kim fell apart at the Hanoi summit, and South Korea is now reporting unusual activity at North Korean nuclear missile bases.

  1. If he can broker talks, there will at least be one adult in the room. I don’t see how anything will come of it and Spanky will never work with anyone who might be given some of the credit.

There is probably no one on the planet who is more capable of doing this than Jimmy Carter. Bravo, President Carter!

(If you can get a deal with Kim Jung Un, I smell a Nobel Peace Prize.)

  3. You know the toddler in chief will reject the offer out of jealousy.

  4. FFS Carter, you’ve lived a righteous life. Step away from this one. There is no “deal” there on either side.

    1. It’s a wonderful idea. Carter is (deservedly) trusted by almost everyone.
    2. Trump will never go for it. Too stupid, too selfish, too shortsighted.
    3. Dammit.
