Yesterday on Fox News, analyst Peter Johnson, Jr. argued that Ben Nelson is holding out on health care reform because he knows “the true meaning of Christmas.” And what is the true meaning of Christmas? Well, according to Johnson, “the true meaning of Christmas is that you don’t destroy babies. You don’t destroy children.”As ThinkProgress first pointed out, Fox News had a segment yesterday in which they discussed the seasonal implications of Ben Nelson’s opposition to federal funding for abortion in the Senate health care bill, which may end up pushing the vote to Christmas.
Johnson, who is listed as a “legal analyst” on the Fox News website, described the situation in the Senate as an “almost Christmas pageant,” where you have Nelson taking a “moral or ethical” stand against the Democrats’ “political or secular rush” to get health care be done by Christmas.
According to Johnson, by not giving in to the Democrats’ threat to work through the holidays if health care isn’t done, Nelson is “saying, implicitly, the true meaning of Christmas is that you don’t destroy babies. You don’t destroy children. And that the federal government should not be part and parcel of that in terms of funding it.”
He concludes: “So who is embodying the true spirit of Christmas in this rush to get things done? Interesting question.” Indeed.
