DETROIT (AP) — A black conservative group is criticizing the Detroit Board of Education for its decision to consider renaming a school named after Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.
The Detroit Free Press reports that the board voted 6-1 last week to seek a new name for the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine.
A black conservative group, Project 21, said in a news release Friday the decision was a “purely political act” that “ignores” the Detroit native’s accomplishments.
The school was named before Carson became President Donald Trump’s HUD secretary. The neurosurgeon gained renown for successfully performing surgery to separate Siamese twins who were joined at the head.
Board member LaMar Lemmons has been among those advocating a change, citing opposition to Trump’s administration among Detroit residents.
While I’ve lost the vast, vast majority of the respect I once had for Carson, he was a fantastic surgeon. He treated my sister when she was hit by a car in 1987 (she was 4 years old) and was phenomenal both with her and my family. Not sure this needs to happen.
No. The decision is an act that acknowledges the Detroit native’s destructive, purely political acts. More power to them.
This is the only maladminstration in history that only has buildings renamed to remove the taint of its very existence.
Name the school after Mike Ilitch, who among other things paid rent for Rosa Parks…
Project 21 forgot to bring the playbook to the game.
They should have included the following terms or claims:
– angry
– Soros-funded
– violation of Carson’s right to free speech
– mob
– lowest black unemployment rate in history
– thugs
– Democrat Ku Klux Klan
Even after his bizarrely incompetent attempt to get the nomination, Detroiters would have had no reason to take this step.
It was Ben Carson himself who made the decision to enmesh himself in the Trump administration, which automatically made him an advocate for Trump’s policies.
