Florida Republican gubernatorial nominee Ron DeSantis on Monday cancelled an interview with the editorial board of the Tallahassee Democrat and representatives of the editorial boards of other papers in the USA Today network in Florida, the Democrat reported.

The DeSantis campaign has yet to explain the cancellation. The campaign did not immediately respond to TPM’s requests for comment Monday.

The Democrat reported Friday that DeSantis had agreed to answer questions from USA Today network editors on Monday, including the Democrat’s editorial board and editorial board representatives from the Pensacola News Journal, the Fort Myers News-Press, Florida Today, the Naples Daily News and the Treasure Coast Newspapers.

The interview was set to start at 3 p.m. and go for an hour. It would’ve been broadcast live on Facebook and the newspapers’ websites, and the editorial boards were set to accept questions in real time from their respective Facebook pages.

Gillum’s interview with the papers’ editorial boards is scheduled for Oct. 31.

The Miami Herald endorsed Gillum Sunday. According to a tally by Florida Politics, Gillum has also been endorsed by the Sun SentinelPalm Beach PostTampa Bay Times and Orlando Sentinel.

  1. Trying to avoid this question…

“Sir you appear to be incredibly racist, what is your response?”

And to be clear it’s not the optics of the question he worries about… it’s his answer.

Can’t say the truth… “I sure am!” Because he will lose independents

Can’t lie and say “No, I’m not.” For fear of losing his base.

Feel the walls closing in DeSantis?

  3. The DeSantis campaign has yet to explain the cancellation.

Anyone who watched the debate didn’t need an explanation.

  4. Two weeks until election day.

Not at all defending DeSantis because he’s a racist among other things and he deserves all the catcalls he gets, but it really feels like there’s a different standard for everyone else. Trump can say and do anything, no matter how vile or disgusting, and seems to get away with it. I see this election as a referendum on Trump and this version of the Republican Party so I guess we’ll see.

Trump would have just done the interview and lied and bs’ed his way through it, then would have been called “tough” by some in the media.
