National security adviser John Bolton is expected to push for a more conservative candidate than President Trump is reportedly considering to replace Nikki Haley as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, The Washington Post reported.

According to Politico, the White House has already spoken with former national security adviser Dina Powell about taking the job when Haley leaves at the end of the year. But Bolton is reportedly interested in pushing through a conservative hawk who will continue to work toward his foreign policy goals of challenging international agreements and groups. An administration official told the Post that whoever Trump chooses will be emblematic of the direction Trump wants to take foreign policy in the second half of his first administration.

Bolton is expected to push for U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell to replace Haley, but, as the Post notes, Grenell may have a difficult time getting through a confirmation. Democrats were hesitant to confirm him for his current post because of his past behavior and comments about women.
