Republican Jean Schmidt Doesn’t Want Obama After Her Guns

Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH)

There are plenty of people hoping President Barack Obama mentions gun control during his State of the Union address this evening in the wake of the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ). Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) is not among them.

“Obviously I’m a strong Second Amendment advocate,” Schmidt told TPM Tuesday ahead of Obama’s speech. “I have my concealed carry permit and I do believe we have the right under the Second Amendment to protect ourselves.”

One person who would like Obama to mention gun control is Daniel Hernandez, the intern credited with saving Giffords’ life. He will make an appearance in New York with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Mayors Against Illegal Guns, where he’ll throw his support behind closing loopholes in gun control laws. Hernandez will be in the First Lady’s guest at the State of the Union this evening.
