A judge upheld a hate crime charge against Michael Enright, the 22-year-old film student who allegedly slashed a taxi driver in an anti-Muslim attack, the Canadian Press reports.
New York Supreme Court Justice Richard Carruthers said a grand jury had had enough evidence to indict Enright and planned a hearing for March 30 to set a trial date.
In an apparently drunken haze, the a student at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, allegedly boarded a cab back in August and asked the driver about his religion. He then allegedly stabbed the driver while yelling “This is a checkpoint, this is checkpoint, motherfucker, I have to put you down.” Enright had just returned from being embedded with a Marine Unit on a trip to Afghanistan. He reportedly accused the cops who arrested him of harboring anti-Irish Catholic sentiments.
Enright, who is out on bail, and said nothing as he left court with his parents and lawyer, the news service reported.
