Cecilia Munoz, director of the White House’s Domestic Policy Council and the president’s top adviser on immigration, said that the administration has a plan in its immigration package to move the undocumented population through the green card process without having to wait “decades and decades” for approval.
Experts warn that under the current legal process, backologs and quotas could take so long to overcome for some categories of applicants that they’d effectively never become permanent residents or citizens. The Senate’s bipartisan working group has kept thing vague as to how they’d deal with this issue.
The White House’s plan, by contrast, suggested some means of speeding up and expanding the green card process to provide a more reliable path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants.
“We’ve though through how to do it in a resonable amount of time,” Munoz said in a Google+ panel on Thursday, saying it was “a very, very important piece of what’s in the presidents proposal.”
