West Virginia Delegate Anthony Barill (D) was injured on Saturday when his son killed himself and reportedly shot his father by accident in the process.

Police said Barill, 80, was sleeping when a bullet went through floor and hit the delegate in the lower leg, according to West Virginia’s CBS affiliate, WDTV

Barill’s son, Bradley, was found dead at the house from what police later described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the news channel. Authorities said Bradley’s wounding of his father appeared to be unintentional.

The elder Barill was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in the Morgantown, W.V. area for treatment.

West Virginia’s House of Delegates released a statement in response to the incident:

All members of the House of Delegates join in sending their thoughts and prayers to Delegate Tony Barill as he recovers at a Morgantown hospital.

“I have received an outpouring of calls from delegates expressing concern for Delegate Barill and his family,” House Speaker Tim Miley said. “In a time such as this, political matters are set aside, as we all concentrate on supporting our friend and colleague and wishing him a speedy recovery.”
