After House Republicans failed to pass their own farm bill Thursday, Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) criticized the GOP leadership and said that if Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) were speaker this “never would have happened.”
Van Hollen was speaking at a joint press conference with Pelosi, claiming the Democratic speaker knew how to lead.
Earlier in the day, the House rejected the five year, half-trillion-dollar farm bill in a 234-195 vote, with sixty-two Republicans bucking party leadership.
The amount of money allocated to the food stamp program was a major source of contention in the legislation. Republicans desired more cuts from the program, while Democrats thought the funding should remain intact.
